Annie Hanauer

Annie Hanauer is an independent dance artist from the USA, based in London, UK, working internationally. She has performed, choreographed, toured, and taught extensively around the world for 16 years. She is currently touring her works UPDRAFT, looking at the body in relation to weather, landscape, and the elements, and A space for all our tomorrows, looking at the idea of utopia through a disability lens. She is working on two new commissions for 2025 in France & Germany.

In addition to her own choreography, Annie has created touring work for Cie Beweggrund (FOREST), Candoco Dance Company (soft shell), Ramped (Off Center), Theater Münster (Madrigale von Krieg und Liebe), Mobius Dance (Curious Playground), ZHdK Zurich University of the Arts (paper landscapes), and as Cowles Visiting Artist 2020 at the University of Minnesota (IMPULSE).

Annie's choreographic work has been supported by LAC - Lugano Arte & Cultura (CH), Teatro Danzabile (CH), Migros Cultural Percentage Dance Festival Steps (CH), IntegrART(CH), Arts Council England (UK), Siobhan Davies Dance (UK), CCN2 Grenoble (FR), Candoco Dance Company (UK), and The Place (UK).  She was a member of the UK’s Equity Dance Committee for two terms.

Annie is passionate about building accessible artistic practices, and wants to joyfully disrupt assumptions of what a dancing body is. She is interested in the power, wisdom, creativity, and resilience of people who have been 'othered', stemming from her own lived experience as a disabled person.

In an active and evolving artistic practice, Annie aims to continue discovering & celebrating the bespoke movement techniques and support structures that disabled artists keep inventing. She is interested in creating supportive working environments and pathways into the professional world for disabled artists. Improvisation, joy, and full-bodied dancing are key ingredients in her world.

Annie currently performs around the world with long-time collaborator Rachid Ouramdane, choreographer & director of Chaillot Theatre National de la Danse (France). She frequently leads inclusive workshops, choreographic residencies, and professional classes around the world.

As a dancer she has performed with the Paris Chamber Orchestra (Baby Doll), Cie For Want of a Better (PUSH), Nic Conibere / Normal Conditions (Caretakers), Emanuel Gat Dance (SUNNY), Lea Anderson (Getting Dressed), Wendy Houstoun (Stupid Women), Lucy Suggate (Spirit Compass), Boris Charmatz (Levée des Conflits), created a film portrait for Jonathan Burrows, Matteo Fargion & Hugo Glendinning's 52 Portraits, and collaborated on research & outreach projects with many independent artists. She danced with Candoco Dance Company from 2008-2014, where she performed works by Trisha Brown, Nigel Charnok, Sarah Michelson, Hofesh Shechter, Thomas Hauert, Rachid Ouramdane, Emanuel Gat, Wendy Houstoun, Marc Brew, Claire Cunningham, Rafael Bonachela, in a solo by Lea Anderson, and in the Olympic handover ceremony in Beijing and the Paralympic closing ceremony in London.
