Madrigale von Krieg und Liebe
(Madrigals of War and Love)
A musical theater evening with dancing, set to music by Claudio Monteverdi, part of Theater Münster's 2023-24 season
A few years before his death, the old Claudio Monteverdi, inventor of the opera and ingenious composer of the 17th century, decided to summarize various vocal pieces in his 8th book of madrigals and thus preserve them for posterity. They are about war and love, and that was in 1638, at the time of the Thirty Years' War, when coexistence throughout Europe was put to a severe test. Longing, loss and fulfillment are once again taken to extremes before life says goodbye to them forever. The production combines the days of baroque music with the first celebrations of the 375th anniversary of the Peace of Westphalia.
